Whenever a child has successfully completed chemotherapy at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and is cleared to go home, the milestone is celebrated with a ceremony of sorts. The family, nurses, and doctors all gather to watch these brave kids ring a golden bell. But the hospital wanted the entire city of St. Louis to hear the inspiring sound of the bell. So to pull this off, it worked with a local media company and the municipal government to produce a bell-ringing billboard that could cut through the noise of one of the busiest highways in the St. Louis area. The giant bell was programmed to ring at precisely the same time the child rang the bell in the hospital. With a budget of just $70,000, the billboard generated more than $3M in earned media.
