Fighting Fake News in Real-Time

Fake news is real. As the prime source of misinformation on social, it undermines democracy and erodes trust in media, both of which can have devastating effects during an election. To combat the spread of false stories during the last election campaign in Quebec, Radio-Canada used the same tactics as those who spread fake news to deliver unbiased, fact-checked journalism. Ads posing a question of the day were sent to targeted audience groups and drove readers to verified news stories. The questions were integrated into Radio-Canada’s twice-daily newsroom briefings, allowing the campaign creative to be tweaked to reflect discussions happening in real time. The effort increased visits to RadioCanada.ca by 27% over the last election and generated more than 15 million impressions by fighting fake news with real facts.
