Last year, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra lost its maestro to cancer. To pay tribute to him, instil hope in all those affected by cancer and, above all, raise funds for cancer research, the orchestra decided to partner with the Quebec Cancer Foundation to create a special object: The “Bow of Hope”.
A cancer patient named Karine decided her lost locks should be used to make a difference: she graciously donated them to create a special violin bow. The “Bow of Hope” was designed and crafted by a luthier for a benefit concert performed by the Quebec Symphony Orchestra to raise donations for the Quebec Cancer Foundation.
The “Bow of Hope” was designed and used for a benefit concert given by the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, aiming to raise awareness and collect donations for the Quebec Cancer Foundation. Attendees (more than 1,800) made a donation when purchasing tickets and were then invited to give more after the “Bow of Hope” performance. A video explaining the idea was posted on the social networks of the Quebec Cancer Foundation and the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and it was shown in the hall before the benefit concert. The online video also encouraged people to donate.
For the first time, a benefit concert used a new instrument created from the hair donated by a woman with cancer. The event aimed to raise funds for the fight against cancer. The performance was filmed and released as a movie to encourage even more people to donate.
The “Bow of Hope” benefit concert attracted a full house (1,885 people), 99% positive reactions on social media and 71% more donations for the Quebec Cancer Foundation over the previous year. But most impressive was how one woman transformed a profound challenge into hope for all. And this novel project ended on a sweet note: Karine is now in remission.
